Seems a graphic problem.
Can you tell what are brand and model of your video card?
If I have to guess, I'll say ATI Radeon, not so recent (x700, maybe? - a friend of mine is having the same problem)

If your video card is an old model, it won't work with Jaunty, I'm sorry

Hello Claudio Moretti
Information I have swapped drives and are replying on the machine that
the second download of 9.04 doesn't work on
They are twin machines so as you see this works while the other machine
is now stop at 30sec in and about 8/10 of the progress bar is done
So far I have checked some 2 thousand file from both download and have
not found any errors.
Tomorrow I will check the hardware and even change it around and let you
known
In the other machine there is now some very slow activity and there is a
little movement along the progress bar
so until till tomorrow
Have a good day
Thanks David

Hi Claudio
Today I changed the video cards from ATI 9600PRO 256M to HIS GeForce
MX440 -SE and tried a Ragechip 216POSA25 they all give the same result
the second 9.04 upgrade donot get to sign in but stops about 10seconds
before with 2 Ubuntu and multi frames below
do you wish to see a screen-shot of this event?
Other wise they swap this runs on the HIS board or Rage
so does the new 8.04
Thanks David

I'd like to see it, if you can; it will be useful.
Also, when you changed your video card, did you change your xorg.conf to use the nvidia/nv/nouveau driver, instead of fglrx?
If so, can you try, also, to change (with your ATI card) your xorg.conf to use the "radeon" driver (or the "ati" one, seems they're quite the same) or, if it doesn't work, to use the "vesa" one?
If we can't fix it here, you may wish to have a look into the forums (http://ubuntuforums.org/), I think you'll get more help :)

I'm sorry I don't know what else it can be..
I suggest you trying to file a generic bug or ask on the forums; you'll get more help than you can get there :(

Can you help with this problem?

Provide an answer of your own, or ask David Wassell for more information if necessary.
