wireless card not working

apt 0.7.20.2ubuntu5 for amd64 compiled on Mar 30 2009 14:06:02
I expected the wireless card to work right away.
It did not see the wireless card in network manager. I have a hp dv 7 with the atheros ar242.
The fix I found was to check the madwifi driver, restart, uncheck the madwifi driver, restart, it then worked right away.
