Are you using the Ubuntu Live CD -- I am making the assumption of "yes."

What is the exact model of your Acer laptop?

Thanks!

What Ubuntu version are you trying? And what's your video card?

8.10 does not work well out of the box with ATI or NVIDIA video cards. If you want to install Ubuntu in a system equipped with one of these cards, you have two choices:

1) Installing 8.04 LTS, which supports these cards fairly well.
2) Installing 8.10 by using the alternate live CD in a curses text-based mode installation, and then manually install the appropriate drivers that you should download elsewhere (usually, at manufacturer web site you may find links to download the drivers or some kind of script to generate .deb packages that you may install with dpkg utility.)

Hope this helps. Good luck,

A friend of mine had the same problem, try booting with acpi=off, when starting up the live cd. I think you can add this by pressing TAB ai the boot menu.

Can you help with this problem?
