How do I shutdown a remote windows xp pc from ubuntu 8.04 on the same lan?

Asked by Alfredborg

I have an ubuntu 8.04 installed on a network and two other pc's using windows xp. Now I need to shutdown the windows xp systems from this ubuntu pc sometimes. Is there a way either to send a command using the terminal or a software to shut them down without going to them of course? Do I have to install something on ubuntu or windows xp units to do this? Please can anyone help on this issue since the other pc's are two stories up and I do not want to keep going up and down the stairs. Thanks

Hello Alfred,
I'm sorry, I have no advice on this topic for you, because it seems that the problem is on the Windows side...
Perhaps you will get lucky and someone here will know how to do it. But I would advise you to go on a Windows community site (I'm sorry, I do not know any but they should have I guess) and ask your question there, you probably will get a faster reply.
Because, the problem is not really how to shutdown a Windows XP machine from Ubuntu. The real question is how to shutdown a Windows PC from remote using the network, which as a Linux user leave me clue-less.

Hello alfredborg,

the solution is pretty easy. install UltraVNC on your windows XP computer. then you can log in remotely from ubuntu using Applictions → Internet → Remote Desktop Viewer

then you should be able to shut it down remotely.

Depending on the version of XP that you are running, you'll need to install the telnet client for XP. This will allow you to telnet into XP and send a reboot command. There may exist some form of ssh for XP in the public domain that will allow you to do the same thing.

Another way of doing a remote reboot/shutdown is via a user script. A .Net script that opens a port and listens for a token to be passed would work. If you have anyone that does .Net, they can write a non-forms based program (considered a console program) that will have the Main() class, and the class to handle the network queries.

You could also install a SNMP client that may also allow you to do a number of things on XP.
