can't update

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade

Open Terminal from the menu Applications->Accessories->Terminal and type:

sudo dpkg --configure -a
sudo apt-get -f install
sudo apt-get update

give your user password when requested, you don't see nothing when you type it, then press enter.

if you have already installed this software, then look for it in the "update manager" (it should be there near the top right corner).
on opening, you would be asked for your passsword.
when you get the full list, then select the software to be updated and then update

if you fail to get the right name of the software in that list then report back.

I went to System - Administration - Update Manager
No list of anything appeared. Got a message saying all programs were up to
date.

Applications - Accessories has "AVG for Linux Workstation"
but a right click does not bring up anything about updating

Right, the methods described before are for updating programs, ie. bugs in a program, new features etc.

What you are trying to update are the virus definitions in AVG, ie. when AVG finds a new type of virus or a more efficent to find Virus X they have to update these definitions.

To update these, what you must do is go in the menu to Accessories > AVG for Linux Workstation

In AVG, then go to Service > Update And it should update you virus defnitions

If you get the error that you don't have permission, don't worry, this is easily solved. Just like to say, that this is AVG's fault for writing a poor piece of code in that case, not Ubuntu's or linux's.

Anyway, open a terminal (Accessories > Terminal [in the main menu]) and type in

sudo avggui

Then type in your password when it asks for it (in the terminal) and AVG should come up again. This time it is running as root and so it has the permission to update the virus definitions.

Follow the steps I said above for updating, and AVG should update the virus definitions

Now that you know how to update and why it wouldn't, it is time to make life easier for yourself. You don't want to have to do the terminal trick everytime you wish to update, so here is how to chnage the main menu entry for avg, to always run in root mode.

Right click on the main menu (on the panel) and select 'Edit Menus'. Then in the menu editor that comes up, in the left sidebar, click on 'Accessories' to access the entries in the Accessories menu. You should then see AVG for Linux Workstation come up in the right hand part of the editor.

Next, right click on the AVG entry in that right hand part, and select 'Properties'. A dialog should come up showing you info about the AVG menu entry.

Then in the field 'Command' in that dialog, there should be entered the command

avggui

You want to change that field so it reads

gksudo avggui

Click close in the dialog afert you yhave done that, and then click close in the menu editor and you have done it! Next time you wish to use AVG, it will ask you for your password, but allow you to update properly (and also scan ALL files on your system, as some are hidden from your normal user).

A year ago I had to dump Linux because of a bug in the spreadsheet program.
Very frustrating! When your personal and business records are at risk you
cannot afford to put yourself in a box that risks loss of the data.
Going back to Windows was then not easy. While Linux imported various Corel
formats, those Corel programs did not import .org formats when I came back.
Had to manually re-enter all the data.

Bad as I hate Windows, at least I didn't have to continuously fight it as I
do with Ubuntu.

Why is seemingly every Ubuntu app so user unfriendly? Why, for example, does
the AVG app not provide some built in update capability instead of offering
it on a tab, which when clicked simply gives me an error message. That makes
no sense. If the programmer can create the error message, he could have as
easily caused the update to happen - or some kind of attached list of
instructions for making it work.

I very much appreciate the help that people like you offer but continue to
wonder why I am always forced to bother you.

Please don't be disheartened. That AVG app is one of very few programs that below to a certain group.

This group contains commercial programs that run on Windows, that have been badly been ported to Linux. AVG don't really care whether people like their anitvirus on Linux or not, as far as they see it, it is a minority and the Windows users are the ones who are paying from premium versions of AVG.

Other programs like OpenOffice or Firefox which below to the main gorup of typical open source and very different. If a bug or a feature request is made, the chnage is very quickly merged, however with AVG, I doubt whether they even accept patches or anything like that.

Anyway, I hope your experience will be better form now on :-) [ And that my advice worked :-) ]

OK. If I have no hope of updating AVG or Clamav----

Can someone recommend an antivirus program made for Linux that I can download, install and run on Ubuntu????
Hopefully without all the terminal stuff.

Please note antivirus are not strictly needed on Linux... ( the might be useful to clean infected files to not spread virus to windows pc)

If you have trouble using terminal and to install them (not so difficult) simply don't care of viruses on Linux they are not really a problem, simply keep you Ubuntu updated/and upgraded.

I had the same problem , and your explanation worked well so far , I still couldn't update the virus deffenitions.
Now I got message "avgupdate already running" ....
So i checked that with command :sudo ps aux | grep avgupdate
but couldnt see nothing !!!! so there wasn't really a proces running of "avgupdate" !!!
That made me think that maybe AVG uses his own proces directory , and start searching for it , Found it :)

My fix:

Shut down AVG.
Start "Gnome Commander" and Then do: "Start Gnome commander as Root", type your password.
Then goto /opt/grisoft/avg7/var/run/
there u find an avgupdate.pid , DELETE the file.
Close "Gnome Commander"
Now start AVG again , and u can update again.

Maybe this helps others to :)
