Upgrade to 8.04 from CD, but without the alternate cd

Asked by Matt Marell

As I have only limited bandwidth available for downloads, I am unable to upgrade online, and neither able to download the alternate cd. I do however have the 8.04 cd, but how can I use this cd to upgrade my Ubuntu 7.10 to 8.04, with loosing all my stettings?

just insert the 8.04 CD when your session in 7.10 is open. The system will detect the CD and you will be asked if you want to upgrade ;)

Thanks
I did that but I do not get the question if I want to upgrade! It just shows me the listing of all the files.
Which file on the CD do I have to run from the FileBrowser to get this going?

ok Matt,
in this case you have to add manually the CD to your sources.
in a terminal type : sudo apt-cdrom add
after that you can run synaptic and upgrade the packages.

I think you can't, you must have the alternate cd, read at end of this: http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/upgrading

Hope this helps

Thanks Nizar,
I am new at this, and started Synaptic for the first time. When I say mark all upgrades, it does not tell me if they have to be checked against the CD-rom of 8.04. Could you please take me step by step through this procedure?

ok Matt;
if you haven't use synaptic before you can be sure that the proposed updates are from the CD. I don't know how you can verify that, sorry.

Can you help with this problem?
