Brightness sliders do not appear in power manager using 8.04

Asked by jwittrock

Hello all,
I installed Hardy Heron today and love it generally, but two things have happened that conspire against me: I have lost brightness hotkey support on my Asus M50sv laptop, and the brightness sliders do not show up in the Gnome power manager under either AC Power or Battery Power. This keeps my brightness level stuck at about 50%. The laptop is new, which is the reason I wonder if Hardy might not have shipped with support for the hotkeys. I have looked into the acpi support threads, but what they describe either does not describe my problem or relates to IBM laptops using Dapper or Feisty. Any help resolving either the hotkeys or the power manager settings would be greatly appreciated.

I fixed it, thanks anyway. The fix is below:

"ok found a solution for u guys using ASUS M50sv laptop.

The problem seems to be with the lihght sensor, which doesn't work properly.

First of all, take a torchlight and point it to the sensor (right to the right of the "ALTEC LANSING" writing on the top of your keyboard) and... voila! lights up!

Ok, here's the fix:

Quote:
$sudo su
#echo 0 > /sys/devices/platform/asus_laptop/ls_switch
This will put a 0 in the ls_switch file, telling your laptop to NOT use the light sensor, which will give you the control of your brightness back.

Hope it helps!"
