unable to type password in terminal in Ubuntu 7.10

Asked by RoBo5005

I successfully installed Ubuntu 7.10 onto WD 80 Gb hard drive on a Biostar P4M800Pro-M7 motherboard,but have a problem with typing the password into terminal box to install HP printer driver package;I have tried to
type the required password into the administraor password line,but it does not display the characters after attempting to fill in the password!!

I was wondering if anyone knows a workaround for this problem other thangoing back to Windows XP??

It's easy - the passwords won't show up as you type them but they are being entered.. Notice that it won't show the '*' while you type, but just type in normally ! this is how it works to avoid people from looking over your shoulder !:-)

This article gives nice info about working of sudo command

Hope that helps

Hello forum member Shankar,
  I think you may have misunderstood my question,so here is the specific
problem:when I try to type my password into the type passwordline,there is
NO indication of characters being typed into terminal window;
the cursor does not move nor respond with an aterisk to indicat a character
was typed!!!

That is my main problem,but I also need to know what via chipset drivers are
supported by Ubuntu 7.1 desktop edition??

Hello forum member,
  I think that it will take me awhile to underrstand the differences between
Ubuntu and Microsoft Windows o s;
the difference of typing in password in terminal or kommand window will
take some getting used in relation to Windows command prompt!!

Thank you for the Ubuntu FAQ tip!!

The lack of visual feedback when you enter your password in the terminal is a common problem for new users, and, unfortunately, it will never change. Just enter your password and hit the Enter key.

Yes there is support for via chipset drivers in linux and also in ubuntu,
