No sound after initial install of Ubuntu 7.10

I followed all the steps in the Debugging Sound Problems community document. It seems that the correct Ubuntu Audio Driver loaded on my Compaq Presario 2701US Laptop that's several years old. On the HP Website it lists the following information about the Windows XP Audio Driver:

ADI SoundMax AC97 Integrated Digital Audio Driver
Compaq Presario 2701US Notebook PC
