preconfigure xorg.conf

Asked by Claudio Henrique

Since from now on Ubuntu will have compiz installed by default, why not create preconfigured xorg.conf files with the best 3D options for the major hardware vendors (nVidia, ATI, Intel)?

Because for legal reasons, Ubuntu cannot ship with the proprietary drivers necessary in most cases for those fancy 3D effects! This is likely to change rapidly thanks to the Nouveau project (for Nvidia cards) and the recent release by AMD/ATI of their specs, but for the time being, there's not much that can be done.

I wasn't refering to the drivers, only to specific xorg.conf files to
each kind of graphics board, to prevent the user from spending time on
it.

It'd be very nice...

Configuring the xorg.conf to use the 3d drivers will result in X not working at all, since the drivers are not installed by default. The latest version of Ubuntu will, however, install 3d drivers for most graphics cards through System>Administration>Restricted Drivers Manager.

I disagree. X will fail to load the 3D modules and will work accordingly, but will work. When the user installs the 3D driver, he'll only have to change from (for example) nv to nvidia.

When you install Ubuntu and the system determines what graphics card you have, it puts the necessary options in xorg.conf for the said graphics card, including options for acceleration.

I am not sure if you are referring to special options/tweaks? If there is something that is being missed and it is safe to have for everyone, you can suggest it so that it gets added by default when installing/reconfiguring the Xorg server.

I'm not sure what you mean at all... I'm running the Gutsy beta, and when I first started it up, it prompted me to install the nVidia driver. I said OK, and it installed it and changed xorg.conf to the right settings. Next time I rebooted, Compiz was working fine.

ASAIK, after installing nvidia-driver, xorg is changed from nv to
nvidia. and that's all. there's no addargbglxvisuals or renderaccel
options set to true, or composite enabled, or anything like it. that's
the point. it could insert these lines on xorg.conf.

Well, if that's what you think, you'd be wrong.

Claudio, do you use Ubuntu Feisty (7.04)?
There has been significant enhancements in the area of graphics support in Ubuntu 7.10 that comes out in less than a fortnight. It would be good to check again then.

Guess not... I had to put addargbglxvisuals (for example) by hand, and
I'm already using 7.10 (to help the error correction phase). For me is
easy, I'm just thinking about the lames out there.

Anyway, this is just a suggestion. If it already is implemented, OK.
if it's too much trouble... well it's OK as well. :-) If not, it is
still just a suggestion do as pleased. With or without it I'm very
pleased with 7.10. Excellent job!

Regards,
Claudio.

In that case it's a bug, and should be reported.
