Differences between official Thunderbird 2 release and Thunderbird 2 package in gutsy tribe 5

Asked by Marco Boneff

I'm writing a configuration guide for Thunderbird 2 on ubuntu gutsy, but I'm noticing some differences between the original version downloadable from mozilla (or installable through Automatix) and the version included in ubuntu gutsy tribe 5. As you can see from the images I uploaded here (http://www.marco.boneff.ch/downloads/tb2-original.jpg) and here (http://www.marco.boneff.ch/downloads/tb2-gutsy.jpg) gutsy version of thunderbird have some functions missing as ie automatic support for Gmail accounts and Movemail.

And here comes the question: is it possible to know WHY these functions have been removed? Do you think these functions will be restored when the stable gutsy will be released?

Thank you for your attention (and sorry for my poor english)

What's going on? We share the same version, but Thunderbird behaves differently!

I was trying to get the movemail entry, but can't :)

I have gmail configured with evolution and pidgin, so maybe it depends on something in environment?

I've just thunderbird package installed (and en_gb locale), package version: 2.0.0.6-0ubuntu4.

I'm using the same version of your package, but it's installed with the italian localization and the package "thunderbird-gnome-support". I installed gutsy downloading the tribe 5 CD and I don't have any other software installed or configured. I'm using this "fresh" installation to write a configuration guide for "ubuntusemplice" an italian community which wants to create a full featured guide to help newbies migrate to ubuntu. Unfortunately we have write this guide while gutsy is still in heavy development, so I don't understand if this problem with thunderbird should be considered as a bug of the program, a mistake made by me when I installed the package or a misterious choice of the ubuntu packagers. That's why I'm asking this!

I've installed thunderbird-gnome-support and that does not change anything. I'm using gutsy with all updates available, there have been quite a few since tribe 5

I don't think you should miss this movemail functionality, it was buggy anyway, see: https://bugs.launchpad.net/thunderbird/+bug/96566. May have been removed. I couldn't get the entry even taking that into account.

Ok, so i switch my system to italian (everything including folder names, err.... so where was that language panel... ;), and guess what, gmail is gone, i switch to spanish and it's not there also.

The downloaded, standalone version has all five entries for me also.

So i would say that's a funny bug, i've made a report:
https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/thunderbird/+bug/145886

I forgot to say that I installed all the available updates too, so we still share the same version of the program but anyway I think it's now clear that it was a bug somewhere in localized versions of thunderbird! Maybe the buggy packages are thunderbird-locale-it and thunderbird-locale-es and the missing options are caused because some translation is missing (maybe they've ported directly this localization from the previous version which was a bit different). I hope to be mistaken, but I suspect there are some other language packages with the same problems...

I'm leaving this question open in order to make possible for others (maybe with other localized versions) to leave a comment.
Thank you for reporting this bug, I hope this will be fixed as soon as possible!

IMO this question should be set to Solved, as both original questions are answered:

"Is it possible to know WHY these functions have been removed?"
Because of bugs/missing translations in the locales.

"Do you think these functions will be restored when the stable gutsy will be released?"
I guess the release of 7.10 answered this question by itself.

Can you help with this problem?
