Where to find the server applications?

Asked by Cosmopoet

Hello

Coming from Windows Server Enterprise I am wanting to get a DNS server, Mail and Apache server up and running on
the server edition of Ubuntu. I am currently using the Server edition with the GUI installed. Where or how would I go about this. ... Please?

Also if I installed the option at initial install not as a LAMP server how do I get this installed now?

Thank you in advance

You can use the Synaptic package manager (graphical) or apt-get (command line).

Hello Andrea,
Thanks for the reply,

I am completely new to this so I will need to get some documentation or point it out more specifically. Because I do not know what you are refering to or what the Apache files are called.Been working in Windows Servers for years no Linux experience at all.

Do I go (Windows) Start>>Run or Start>> Add and Remove Programs>> Add Windows Components etc..

What is the equivelant of this in Ubuntu Server?

Thanks very much

In Ubuntu, click on Applications/Add Remove Programs...

You will get a list of available packages, categorised by type.
I am not on Ubuntu at the moment so I cannot tell you the exact name of the category that has the DNS server. It should be something like "Network sevices".

You can also install packages from "Synaptic", through it requires an extra level of experience.

For general hints on Ubuntu and DNS server installation, you can google for "ubuntu dns server" (without the quotes).

Hello Simos,

Thanks for the help that was great! I do wish I could get a document on installing and configuring the components via GUI.
I did however find documentation with command line that will work for now.

Thanks again
