Afrikaans language pack

Asked by Bernard Stafford

I noticed that Afrikaans language is not available when installing Ubuntu.
How much of the language templates need to be completed to have a base language pack ?
Does all of the templates have to be completed to have Afrikaans language on the Ubuntu language list ?
Here is the templates link: https://translations.launchpad.net/ubuntu/kinetic/+lang/af
Thank You in advance for the answers.
Respectfully,
Bernard

Hi Bernard!

It's true that the Afrikaans language packs are not included in the ISO for installing Ubuntu, and I'm assuming that's what you mean. Actually this is true for the language packs of most languages; only a small subset of the most widely used languages are represented in the form av language packs on the ISO.

For the users this means you can select your language of choice in the installer, complete the installation, and your chosen language will be effective at first login. But if you "Try Ubuntu", many translated strings will be shown untranslated in the live session.

So, basically I need to have the entire Template of 314,848 translations completed before
Afrikaans will be considered to be an Ubuntu install language ?
What it the process to add an new installed language to Ubuntu ?

No. It's not about the translation completion. There is a 5% threshold to create the language packs, but you already have language packs.

Only a few of the biggest languages (e.g. French, Spanish, Portuguese, Simplified Chinese...) are included on the ISO. For all other languages, irrespective of translation completion, it works just as it does for Afrikaans. That's a Canonical Desktop decision. You may want to suggest that more languages are included on the ISO, but there is no special procedure for doing so AFAIK.

Or are we possibly talking past each other?

Are you possibly talking about the new Subiquity based installer? If so, please note that that installer is not ready to be used yet. I'm talking about the Ubiquity installer only.

Thank You for the answer.
I will ask the Desktop Team at Canonical if they would consider adding Afrikaans.
Thank You for all of your hard work and dedication for Ubuntu and Launchpad.
