Request to activate the Sundanese (su) Translator Team

Thanks for your interest in working with translations into Sundanese. I would like to say a few things before approving the team.

First, since Sundanese would be a new language for Linux, did you read this page:

One thing you really must do before it's meaningful to start translating is to request that a su_ID locale is created in glibc. You can file a bug for the purpose:

Ideally you should attach a proposed locale definition file to such a bug. If you don't, it may take very long time before anybody attends to your request.

Another thing I want to emphasize is that only a portion of the translation work should be done via Launchpad. Translation of Ubuntu is mostly about translating free software for Linux, and the bulk of the work happens upstream (GNOME, freedesktop, Mozilla, LibreOffice, Debian...).

For most of the 'core packages' in standard Ubuntu, translations are made available to the users via language packs. Currently there are 320,000+ strings in the language packs, and we apply a threshold before creating language packs for a new language: At least 5% of the strings, or 16,000 strings need to be translated first. Before the language packs have been created, it's not easy to view the result of your efforts.

Can you please:

1. File a glibc bug about the creation of the su_ID locale

2. Confirm that you are aware of what I wrote above.

Once you have done that, I'll be happy to approve your team for Ubuntu translation.

Please don't hesitate to ask for clarifications. It's not quite easy to grasp all this in the beginning.

Thank you for your response!

I have read the Knowledge Base, and will fulfill the other requirements (to
file the locale).

I'm aware that the translation of the 'core packages' can take a very long
time. Me and the other team members will do it as best as we can.

The upstream translation for the free software also particularly have been
done by some friends, for example the Mozilla Rocket (
https://blog.mozilla.org/l10n/2018/09/21/l10n-report-september-edition-2/)
is now available in Sundanese since 2018 (
https://mozilla.or.id/2018/08/13/firefox-rocket-to-be-soon-available-in-javanese-and-sundanese/).
More applications will be translated soon.

I will let you know when everything is ready.

I saw the glibc bug including the patch. Great! Hopefully it will be dealt with in time to be included in Ubuntu 21.10.

That, and the rest of your reply above, is sufficient for me, and I just approved ~ubuntu-l10n-su for translating Ubuntu into Sundanese.
