Indian languagea for Mobile phones

Asked by Ramachandran.C

Government of India is introducing a Unique Indentification Number(UID) to all citizens of India.
It is reliably learnt that each individual will be provided with a mobile phone /number.
Since there are number of local languages, the OS has to be in the local language to facilitate easy communication.
I wish that UBUNTU comes up with an OS to communicate in the local language in open-source.
This is a massive project connecting 100 crores(100,000,000) of people.

Hi,

Thanks for your interest in Ubuntu Translations, but I'm not sure I understand your question :-).

How can we help you? Which particular language are you interested in translating?

Regards,
David.

Hi,

For an Ubuntu OS to run on Internet devices, you should check the Ubuntu Netbook Edition (UNE). You can get the latest development images at http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-netbook/daily-live/current/, which should be available in all the languages you are mentioning (with diferent levels of translation coverage).

You could also check out the Ubuntu Moblin Remix (more info at http://www.ubuntu.com/news/canonical-dell-deliver-ubuntu-moblin-remix), but as it is not translated by Ubuntu translators, I'm not sure about which languages are included.

I am thinking about cell phones with UBUNTU as OS and in the Indian
languages.
Nokia, Samsung, Motorola, Sony Ericcson and other manufacturers can
install UBUNTU in their products.
Already these products are selling in large volume and once UID (Unique
identification)is introduced,
cell phones will be sold in lot more volume.

Hi Ramachandran,

We are just a couple of person helping with Ubuntu translations.

Ubuntu is already available in Tamil, so the second issues is already solved.

If you want to see the first issue solved, you should contact Nokia, Samsung, Motorola, Sony Ericsson and ask them to provide phones with Ubuntu.

We, the Ubuntu translators, can not install Ubuntu on behalf of those telephone companies.

Good luck,
Adi

Hi Ramachandran,

Did that solve your question? If so, could you mark it as solved in https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu-translations/+question/100174?

Thanks!
