1) If I translate a program (the templates), for example Pidgin: How many time it takes the update for people who needs this translate in their language?
2)¿Must be the template in green colour, for the translate it's available?

The problem is that I've translated a template to my language. But when I install it, it's not in my language.

If you translate a program, several things need to happen before it becomes useful:

1. If you are not a member of a translation team for the project, somebody who is a member needs to approve the translations you entered. How long that takes depends on the project and on the translation team.

2. The people who publish the program need to release new translation files for the program. How long that takes depends on them.

If you are talking about translating a package in Ubuntu, the translation teams are organized into the Ubuntu translation group; you can find people who manage the translations to your language there and talk to them.

Thank you very much. I'm sorry for my english level.

I'm a member of Ubuntu Asturian Translators (as you can see). I asked to the team ( we are members of Free Software Asturian Translators www.softastur.org ) about this question.

The problem is in Xulrunner and Firefox packages ( https://translations.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/hardy/+lang/ast ). They are completely translated, but we don't see the results... You said: "The people who publish the program need to release new translation files for the program". Then, are our packages ok, and we'll be able to see the results with 8.10 of Ubuntu (or before), is correct?

There is another issue with those two packages specifically: their native translation format is XPI. Launchpad cannot export that format yet, but imports for these projects nowadays must be done in XPI format.

If you upload PO files, you either get errors about duplicate msgids or a successful upload that doesn't actually update the translations. This is because XPI uses symbolic identifiers as msgids, and PO files don't; the system can't reliably associate regular English-language msgids from a PO file with the XPI file's symbolic msgids.

I'll ask Alexander Sack, who is in charge of the Firefox translations in Ubuntu, to give your question a look as well.

Hi Astur,

firefox/xulrunner (aka xpi) translations are relatively new; this has two major consequences for translation groups:

 1. we have no mechanism to export a diff that you can contribute back in case that your language is already translated upstream. This paired with our policy to not ship translations that are different to existing upstream translations makes it unfeasible for the moment to do improvements when your language is already translated upstream.

 => this means that we cannot include your changes if your language already has an upstream translation; sorry if thats the case. We are working hard on make this happen in future though.

 2. in order to test, you currently need to convert the "raw" export format (.po files) to .xpi files. Since only complete translations allow you to get an "official" upstream translation group status (e.g. in mozilla) and because of the unique property of mozilla translations that can break applications if done wrongly, you need to do these tests regularly.

ok. I'll wait for the answer. If there is something that we have to do to see Firefox in our language (Asturian), please tell it me. We will be grateful if you help us to take the steps we need to complete it.
