converting cedilla characters to comma below

Asked by Adi Roiban

S with comma below and T with comma below are standard characters for Romainan language.

The problem with this charactes is caused by the lack of suport in Windows XP where this characters are not available and the Romanian keyboard layout form Windows is using the cedilla version of S and T.

I have added a change request for rosetta #230725 where I asked an automatic conversion from cedilla to comma below for each cedilla character added to a Romanian translation.

It would be nice to have this coversion only after bug #230725 is solved. Otherwise we will have an uniform database but the next day some will add a cedilla character.

Many thanks!

I'm sorry, but I don't think we'll have time to solve this. It requires a new mechanism with its own risks (see bug report), whereas it can be worked around outside Launchpad by doing a search-and-replace before a program update is released, and re-importing the changed translations.

The main problem in downloading, converting and then uploading again is the number of packages cumulated with long wainting times for downloading and uploading.

This is why I was thinking at a conversion directly in the database database

Adi, you can also download a language pack right after it had been generated, but that would still leave you with the problem of uploading everything back (though, you'd need to upload only files which have changed characters).

Btw, I'll still consider doing this if you can at least download a language pack file (a full one from https://translations.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/hardy/+language-packs) and check that the number of files that need changing is really big. You can also check with PO files in your /usr/share/locale-langpack/ro/LC_MESSAGES/

Hi,

I am always using the language packs and files from /usr/share/locale and downloading is not such a great problem.
But for uploading I start by sending them upstream.

This conversions is useless if bug #230725 is not solved as after the conversion there will be people adding wrong characters.

So this conversion is only practical if we can make sure no cedilla characters can be further added to launchpad.

Many thanks!

We'll keep the bug on the list. Just be warned that it could take a lot of time for us to get to it! For a good implementation we may need to get into Unicode normalization and such.

Can you help with this problem?
