Lock UNR desktop for school kids

Hi. I'm setting up UNR on some Acer AspireOne netbooks with the intent to allow middle school kids to use them. Part of the goal is to have them log in with an account that cannot make any changes to the configuration of the netbooks or the UNR launcher. I've been trying to figure out how restrict changes to the UNR launcher and so far have found nothing. Any help would be very much appreciated. Thanks.

I ran the following commands:
chmod -R u-w /home/student/.gconf
chmod -R u-w /home/student/.gconfd

Tthat didn't work. I mean, it worked (in that it locked the launched from changes), but it caused errors on the next reboot/login. So, I ended up putting write permissions for the student user back on those two folders (and all enclosed items).
