Will LVPM recognise SATA ULi M5287?

Asked by LaughingBubba

Hi, I can't get boot the Kubuntu LiveCD (have checked Md5sum's and burned @ 4x)

As far as I can tell the boot process recognises my Seagate Barracuda 7200.8 Serial ATA (model ST3250823AS) as an IDE.

See my post on Kubuntu forums:
http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/index.php?topic=3092463.msg143466#msg143466

The interesting thing is that both GPARTED and Parted Magic are able to recognise the drive correctly (which is how I partitioned the drive)

Under WinXP I need to the Uli M5287 drives which then makes XP recognise it as a SCSI drive (go figure...)

I've tried various boot options like libata.force

So my alternative is to load Kubuntu using Wubi (which I have done in the past) and use LVPM to migrate to the EXT3 partition I've set up.

BUT my worry is that I'll end up with the same problem (ie boot process thinking it's an IDE) and the XP MBR altered so I can't wuse either.

Thanks in advance,
LB

If Wubi's working, then most likely your hard drive is recognized. In that case, what's causing the liveCD to fail to boot is either your CD drive, or you made a bad burn. Try using UNetbootin http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/ from Windows and if it works, then it is indeed not an issue with your hard drive; in that case LVPM should work.

Thanks for the quick reply Geza!

I'm pretty confident about the LiveCD as it was burned at 4x with write &
test which was success full.

Wubi doesn't work now (see below as I've since reformatted the drive) and
stops dead when I boot into it with "try (hd0,0): EXT2"

I've used wubi from the LiveCD and also tried a download of the latest wubi
and the iso on the hdd with the same result, so I'm pretty sure it's not
that.

Wubi did work before i reformated and partioned the hdd. The old setup was
how the manfacturer had it partitioned:

1: FAT32 a small hidden recovery partn
2: FAT32 the main xp boot partn
3: FAT32 a spare partn

(it's an acer aspire e500 desktop btw)

I reformatted after an xp crash that I couldn't recover, thinking I might as
well go completely linux and just boot into xp to play games.

so the set up now is:

1: EXT3 empty partn
2: linux_swap
3: NTFS partn which flagged as the boot partn

I'm currently booting off Partn 3 which is why I can email you.

So I'm back to the same conclusion that the boot process isn't able to
detect the drive is really a SATA. I'm gessing thats because even the BIOS
says it's an IDE.

I've rebooted with the Gparted live cd again just to double check it can
still detect the drive ... which it does as SDA (a scsi just like xp). Did
the same with Parted Magic.

Cheers,
Joseph Szili

Hi Geza, it's fixed.

I used break=mount as a boot option when booting from the LiveCD.

Sure enough that's where it stops but when I entered 'exit' from the initramfs prompt it just kicked into continuing with the LiveCD boot (I did it twice just in case it was fluke)

Once that was done I just used the install application in the Live desktop and here I am on KDE4 running off the primary EXT3 partition on my hard drive. Yay!

I don't think it was the media I now suspect something cooky with the actual CD/DVD drive.

Thanks for you attention.
