Sahana - please create super-project & turn series into projects

Asked by Tim McNamara

Hi there,

https://launchpad.net/sahana has been using series for each of its different software projects. We currently have a Python, PHP, & J2ME on the go. Some mobile projects (iPhone/Andriod) are possibilities. It would be good to use LP properly & create a project for each one.

In order for this to happen, could we please:

1) break the vcs link from the sourceforge sahana project
2) rename the sahana project to sahana-py
3) create a project-group sahana
4) create a project sahana-php
5) create a project sahana-j2me
6) establish a vcs link between the sahana sourceforge project & sahana-php

<timClicks> is it possible to create a project group 'sahana'
<thumper> timClicks: not with a project called sahana
<thumper> timClicks: projects and project groups share a namespace
<thumper> timClicks: have you asked a question about a project group?
<timClicks> thumper: yes
<timClicks> ideally, I would like project-group 'sahana' and projects 'sahana-py' 'sahana-php' 'sahana-j2me'
<timClicks> can we rename sahana > sahana-py
<timClicks> and break the link w/ the vcs import?
<thumper> timClicks: projects can be renamed, but only by admins, best done early in a projects life
<thumper> timClicks: it might be worthwhile putting that in the LP question

Hello Tim: We would be happy to help you with this request, but you need to get permission to create a Super Project. Could you look at this page:

https://wiki.canonical.com/InformationInfrastructure/OSA/LPActioningPolicies

to get approval, and then we can go ahead and make the changes you request.

Thank you, Stefan

I can help create the project group, but I need an admin to rename /sahana to /sahana-old. I will then create the project group and the project owner can setup the rest. I will deactive the old project when the project owner says his is done with it. Note that the series can be moved to different projects, so you can dismantle the current project instead of setting up everything as a new project.

We need the admins to rename the project to start the next steps.

Admins are ready, we just need to let some time go after an announcement to let people update their scripts and wiki links.

This is Mark Prutsalis - I am CEO of the Sahana Software Foundation. You can review our governance at http://wiki.sahanafoundation.org/doku.php/foundation:start and http://www.sahanafoundation.org

I can not get access to https://wiki.canonical.com/InformationInfrastructure/OSA/LPActioningPolicies - it says I am not authorized to view this page.

We need to review this request made and how it fits into the plans of the Foundation - which governs these projects.

Please all hold on any actions until this is resolved.

We also need to define for you the proper project owner for the Launchpad Super Project that will be the master for all Sahana sub-projects. It is not Dominic nor Tim, but needs to reside with an Officer of the Foundation.

The OSA/LPActioningPolicies is not directly relevant to this issue. The issue was assigned to an admin with clearly stating why... admins do not create projects groups (super projects) and thatr document says that.

I have the power to create project groups. We require that each sub project have its own code base. The request to break the existing project into separate code bases looks legitimate. Once the admin has re-named the existing project, I will create the new one very quickly and give the project to the person or team that you designate. You may want to use Sahana Admin who is the current owner of the exisitng project. The owner of the existing project can transfer the series to the new projects you create.

Added for reference:

[02:14] <sinzui> chamindra, I can make the project group once an admin renamed the current project
[02:15] <chamindra> it asks to rename the project from sahana to sahana.old in order to create a super project.. but I am not sure where to do that. As "change details" only gives display name
[02:15] <chamindra> sinzui: can you tell me where I need to go to change the name
[02:15] <chamindra> I am in the admin group of the main project
[02:16] == glen [~<email address hidden>] has joined #launchpad
[02:17] <sinzui> chamindra, you cannot rename the launchpad id/name, only an admin can
[02:17] <glen> bazaar.launchpad.net giving 500 now
[02:17] <chamindra> sinzui: ok sure. What do I need to do so that you can proceed
[02:18] <sinzui> chamindra: there is nothing we can do until an admin renames the old project: which I think is this question: https://answers.edge.launchpad.net/launchpad-registry/+question/106129
[02:19] <chamindra> oh ok
[02:19] <chamindra> I presume you mean a launchpad admin. OK then I will just wait till it is done
[02:20] <sinzui> chamindra, I can make the project group with basic information when the name is available. I will assign the project group to you to complete
[02:20] <chamindra> sinzui: thanks for your help..
[02:21] <chamindra> you can email me on <email address hidden> with the details when you are ready
[02:22] <chamindra> wait a sec.. is there anything you need us to do to make the name available, or will you do that?
[02:22] <chamindra> just checking
[02:23] <chamindra> sinzui: ^
[02:24] <sinzui> chamindra, I was going to copy the summary and description of the current project and for the project groups, then make you the owner. You can fix the information and add the current projects to the group
[02:24] <chamindra> sinzui: sure will do

Hi chamindra, et al.

https://launchpad.net/sahana is a project group
https://launchpad.net/s3 is the orginal project.

I copied some of the information from s3 to sahana to start the group. I made sahana-pmc the owner. Anyone in that team can change the project details as needed.

To complete the project group, visit each project, choose Change details, and enter 'sahana' in the 'Part of' field.
