how and where to backup files of remote server which is on ubuntu 16.04 LTS

I am new to ubuntu , right now I'm using a remote server where ubuntu 16.04 is running on it .I wanted to upgrade from 16.04 to 18.04 and run mysql on it. The reason I wanted to upgrade is mysql is not running on 16.04 LTS.
