Need PHP8 for i386 (18.04 or 19.04)

Asked by David Albert

I have a complex website that runs on an old i386 18.04 LAMP server and I need to upgrade it to PHP8.

It appears that PHP8 existed in at least the cli form for i386 18.04+ at one time:

$ php -v
PHP 8.0.24-SergeyD/2.3 (cli) ( NTS )
Copyright (c) The PHP Group
Zend Engine v4.0.24, Copyright (c) Zend Technologies

However, all repository support has disappeared, and along with it php extensions and libapache2-mod-php8.0. The website has a complex set of dependencies that make it hard to bring to a new 22.04+ x64 server (I've tried), so the "just don't do that" answer isn't at all helpful. If you know how, in 2024, to install PHP8 on an old 18.04 or 19.04 LAMP server including the required apache2 module, I would be grateful if you'd share the information! Thanks!
