flash image with i86

Asked by Frank Lamberts

want to prepare a bootable stick from a download 22.04 amd 64.iso. Would like to install on an empty Lenovo Thinkpad. The preparation i do with an old i86 architecture computer. How to create that bootable stick? Have downloaded balenaetcher, but this doesn't install (because amd64?). Is there any workaround?

There are 32 bit versions (x86) of balena etcher available for download on https://etcher.balena.io/
Are you sure that you selected the right one?

What operating system is that other computer running?

 Dear Manfred,
Thank you so much for your reply.Indeed I tried already a 32 bit version (balenaEtcher-1.7.9-ia32.AppImage) but this one doesn't open at all. Probably I have to use the terminal? Which code? The 64 bit version (balena-etcher_1.18.4_amd64.deb) opens with a click, however the image (see screenshot) tells me there would be 0 bytes. The file has 90 mb.Is there a 32 bit debian version somewhere, which I should try? If yes I hope this would not do any damage to the 64 bit version of the file (ubuntu-22.04.4-desktop-amd64.iso)?Sorry for my stupid questions. I'm just a bloody greenhorn user.Thank you again for any help...

What model of Lenovo Thinkpad do you have? 64bit CPUs have been around for ages.

It's called Machine Type 12M2, built in Nov 2023.

Do you have any idea how I could make progress with Etcher on the old 32 bit machine?

CPU is an Intel Core i3 1215U which is 64bit. Are you wanting to make the bootable USB on a 32bit OS? Is this the requirement?

Yes, exactly, that’s the point, if it’s possible….and if yes, how?

The architecture of the system copying data is irrelevant to using a 64bit ISO.

Rufus has a 32bit binary

It is. Are you wanting to make a bootable USB from Windows or are you using Linux in some way and want to make a bootable USB from Linux?

Yes, I’m using 32 bit Linux and I would like to prepare 64 bit Linux

You can use the dd command to put an ISO on USB. The Ubuntu ones are hybrid boot so this works

This sounds very promising to me, thank you. May I ask you for help with the exact command line for an example? It’s years ago that I used the terminal and the little I knew I have forgotten… Thank you in advance.
